Rubber Dam Application

The rubber dam is an essential tool in dentistry used to isolate one or multiple teeth during procedures such as restorative treatments, endodontics, and adhesive dentistry. It provides a dry, clean field by preventing saliva and moisture contamination while also protecting the patient from accidental aspiration of instruments or materials.

The application process begins with selecting the appropriate rubber dam sheet (latex or non-latex) and punching holes corresponding to the teeth to be isolated. A clamp is then placed on the anchor tooth to secure the dam, followed by stretching the dam over the teeth. A frame is used to hold the dam in position, and floss ligatures may be applied to ensure complete sealing around the teeth.

Using a rubber dam improves visibility, enhances procedural efficiency, and promotes patient safety and comfort by reducing the risk of debris ingestion or soft tissue injury.
